India’s DRR Dhan 100: A High-Yield, Water-Saving Rice Variety Boosting Productivity by 19%

21 July 2025, New Delhi: For Indian rice farmers seeking to increase yields while conserving water, the newly developed DRR Dhan 100 (Kamla) variety offers significant advantages. Developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), this rice variety is specially designed to meet the challenges of water scarcity and the demand for faster crop cycles in India’s diverse agro-climatic zones.

Key Features of DRR Dhan 100

  • 19% Higher Yield: DRR Dhan 100 outperforms traditional Indian rice varieties by producing approximately 19% more grain, helping farmers increase their income.
  • Faster Maturity: The crop matures in about 130 days, which is 15-20 days earlier than conventional varieties, allowing farmers to optimize their cropping calendar.
  • Water-Efficient and Drought Tolerant: This variety thrives under limited irrigation due to moderate drought tolerance, making it suitable for India’s water-stressed regions.
  • Premium Grain Quality: Based on the popular Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204), it retains the aroma and grain quality preferred by Indian consumers.
  • Strong Stalks for Reduced Lodging: DRR Dhan 100’s sturdy stems reduce crop loss during adverse weather conditions common in India.
  • Environmentally Friendly: The variety contributes to up to 20% reduction in methane emissions and saves up to 7,500 million cubic meters of irrigation water annually.
  • Gene-Edited with CRISPR-Cas: Developed using precise gene-editing technology without introducing foreign DNA, ensuring safety and acceptance.

DRR Dhan 100 is suited for cultivation across major rice-growing states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. It is particularly valuable in areas with water shortages or where early harvesting is desired.
