Pivot Bio Launches Series Celebrating Farm Heroes

10 October 2025, Minneapolis: Pivot Bio, one of the most innovative agtech companies in the world, today announced the launch of “Pivotal People – Inspired by Real Farm Heroes,” a new series that shines a light on farmers whose courage, determination and innovation are transforming agriculture in big and small ways. The series celebrates unsung heroes who remind us that farming is not just about growing crops, it’s about growing hope, resilience and community.

The inaugural story features Chris Kolkhorst and his son, Coy, of Texas. Chris, a former Rice University baseball standout and San Diego Padres draft pick, once walked away from the game of baseball to build a life centered on family and purpose. Years later, when Coy was born prematurely at just 23 weeks, Chris made it his mission to support Coy and find ways to help him grow and inspire others along the way. While Chris’ passion was sports and Coy’s was video games, the two discovered a shared passion for farming.

Their first season was humbling: They planted corn but harvested only four ears. Rather than give up, Chris and Coy turned to Pivot Bio for support. With donated product and technical guidance, they transformed their farm. The following season, their fields thrived, and so did their bond. Today, their fields continue to perform, and that bond has grown even stronger.

“Chris and Coy’s story embodies everything ‘Pivotal People’ is about,” said Chris Abbott, CEO of Pivot Bio. “They remind us that behind every acre and every harvest, there are real families with grit, determination and an unwavering belief in what’s possible. They are heroes in the truest sense, and we’re proud to stand beside them.”

Chris, reflecting on his journey, added, “Baseball gave me discipline, but farming with Coy gave me perspective. To see him work the land and grow alongside, it is the greatest reward of all. I am so proud of Coy and the work ethic he has. He has met his challenges with the same sense of hope and determination as I did in baseball. He is my hero.”

Coy, now 17, continues to inspire with his perseverance and heart. Facing the challenges of dyslexia and ADHD, he has never let obstacles define him. Instead, he and his dad are proving that farming is about much more than yields, it’s about resilience, patience and hope for the future.

Pivot Bio had the opportunity to pay a return surprise visit to Chris and Coy, along with their family and friends, to make an inaugural donation to their new nonprofit, the Gritmen Foundation.

Through “Pivotal People – Inspired by Real Farm Heroes,” Pivot Bio will spotlight other farmers across the country whose stories reflect the strength of America’s agricultural communities. Each installment will reveal the human side of farming, where science, innovation and grit come together to shape the future of food, fiber and fuel.
