Syngenta Expands Quillaja-Based Biofungicide Quillibrium® Across North America

19 February 2026, Basel: A resource used by Chile’s Mapuche community is entering crop protection programs, as Syngenta and Botanical Solution Inc. (BSI) expanded their partnership to bring Quillibrium®, a biofungicide derived from Quillaja saponaria, to growers across North America.

The Quillaja tree has been used by Indigenous Mapuche communities for cleansing and medicinal purposes due to its saponin content. The same plant source is now being used in disease management programs for agriculture.

Expansion into Key Markets

Under the agreement, Syngenta will distribute Quillibrium® in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. In Chile, the product is marketed as BotriStop®.

The biofungicide will be used in crop protection, turf and ornamental segments, and post-harvest disease management.

Use in South American Cropping Systems

Since 2021, Syngenta and BSI have worked with growers in Chile and Peru, applying Quillibrium® on grapes, tomatoes, berries, cherries, and other crops.

The product has been used to manage diseases including Botrytis, Sour Rot, Powdery Mildew, and Alternaria alternata, with reported gains in yield and produce quality.

Production Method and Supply

BSI produces the active ingredient using a plant tissue culture platform, enabling extraction without harvesting trees. The approach is intended to maintain supply while avoiding pressure on natural tree populations.
