EU Must Keep Momentum on Biopesticide Access

27 November 2025, EuropeThe European Parliament has sent a strong signal in favour of innovation by adopting its report on biological control agents. This move supports faster access to safe, effective biopesticides across the EU which a key step towards a more resilient and sustainable food system.

Biopesticides play a vital role in complementing conventional crop protection tools, helping farmers manage pests while reducing environmental impact. The report calls for several important measures to make this happen:

  • Clear definition: Biopesticides should be natural or identical to nature if synthesised.
  • Mutual recognition: Strengthen and operationalise mutual recognition; explore automatic recognition and a single EU zone.
  • Approval periods: Extend first approval and renewal up to 25 years.
  • Fast track: Reduce bureaucracy with priority lanes and extra resources, without delaying conventional pesticides .

Crucially, it emphasises the need for sufficient scientific and administrative capacity to ensure that speeding up access to biopesticides does not compromise other approvals or safety standards.

This vote comes as the Food & Feed Safety Omnibus seeks to reduce duplication and streamline EU authorisation processes. Together, these developments reinforce a clear message: EU can move faster on innovation while upholding safety and science.

Parliament’s support signals momentum for strengthening the farmers’ toolbox. Faster biopesticide approvals show Europe is committed to practical, complementary and innovative solutions for resilient agriculture – said Olivier de Matos, Director General of CropLife Europe.
