ISO Provisionally Approves New Fungicide Name “Metcyclofenstrobin” from Syngenta

10 May 2025, New Delhi: The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has provisionally approved the new common name metcyclofenstrobin for a strobilurin-class fungicide developed by Syngenta Crop Protection, AG. The announcement was made by the ISO 1750 Maintenance Agency on 7th May 2025.

The chemical identity of metcyclofenstrobin is methyl (2Z)-2-(5-cyclohexyl-2-methylphenoxy)-3-methoxy-2-propenoate, with the CAS number [2490157-71-4].

This new compound falls under the widely used strobilurin family of fungicides, known for their role in controlling a broad spectrum of fungal diseases in crops by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration in fungal cells.

Stakeholders who wish to raise objections to the provisional approval—such as trademark infringement concerns—are invited to contact the ISO Maintenance Agency no later than 7th November 2025. If no valid objections are raised, “metcyclofenstrobin” will be formally included in the next edition of ISO 1750, which compiles both preferred and common names for pesticides.

The introduction of metcyclofenstrobin marks another addition to Syngenta’s robust crop protection portfolio and reflects ongoing innovation in fungicide development.
