CropLife Europe Urges Swift Finalization of EU NGT Regulation to Support Agri-Food Innovation
08 July 2025, EU: CropLife Europe, alongside several partners from the EU agri-food and feed value chain, has called for the swift conclusion of negotiations on the proposed regulation governing New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). The organization emphasized that this legislation is critical to fostering innovation and ensuring a resilient and competitive European agri-food sector.
Significant progress has been achieved under the leadership of the Polish Presidency, which has steered constructive discussions around the proposed regulatory framework. However, key issues remain unresolved.
In a joint statement, CropLife Europe urged EU institutions to reach a balanced and science-based agreement, especially in the face of mounting challenges related to sustainability, climate change, and food security. The organization highlighted the urgent need for a clear and proportionate legal pathway for NGT-derived plants and products, underlining that Category 1 NGTs—those closely resembling conventionally bred plants—should not be subject to mandatory traceability or labeling requirements.
“Removing unnecessary regulatory burdens for Category 1 NGTs is essential for maintaining Europe’s global competitiveness and aligning with international trade partners,” the statement noted.
With the Danish Presidency now at the helm, CropLife Europe expressed confidence in its capacity to bring the negotiations to a successful close. The Presidency’s stated priorities—enhancing innovation, resilience, and supporting the EU’s green transition—are well aligned with the objectives of the NGT regulation, according to CropLife Europe.
