EU Policy Podcast: Is Commissioner Hansen’s Vision The End Of The Green Deal?
18 July 2025, Switzerland: In the newest episode of the podcast “FiBL Collaboration”, policy specialist Hansjürg Jäger from HAFL and Jürn Sanders, chairman of the management board of FiBL Switzerland are discussing the new Vision for Agriculture and Food that was recently presented by Commissioner Hansen.
Following the publication of the conservative EU Commissioner Christophe Hansen’s Vision for Agriculture and Food for 2040 in February, some declared the Green Deal and Farm-to-Fork Strategy “history”. The lack of information about specific targets led many to question what Commissioner Hansen’s vision of an “attractive, competitive, resilient, future-oriented and fair agri-food system for current and future generations of farmers and agri-food operators” would be. This was particularly the case for sustainable agriculture in general and organic farming specifically.
How will the sector be affected?
This was particularly the case for sustainable agriculture in general and organic farming specifically. In this international episode of the FiBL podcast, moderator Sabine Reinecke welcomes two guests: Hansjürg Jäger (lecturer in agrarian policies and markets at Bern University of Applied Sciences) and Jürn Sanders (FiBL Switzerland’s chairman of the management board) discuss how the vision could affect the agricultural sector and the future of organic farming.
Critical questions concerning key gaps
The podcast dives into aspects of competitiveness and fair prices in agriculture and explains how administrative simplification could work in practice for farmers. It also raises critical questions concerning key gaps in the vision relating to sustainable food consumption and discusses intergenerational renewal, innovation and market-based approaches in the context of their future role in sustainable agricultural production in the EU.
