High Yielding Varieties of Basmati Paddy: IARI Recommendations and Seed Treatment Guidelines
22 June 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has issued important recommendations for farmers preparing to sow basmati paddy. According to IARI, for one hectare of paddy field, a nursery area of 800 to 1000 square meters is sufficient. Before sowing, seed treatment with Captan at 2 grams per kilogram of seed is strongly advised to protect against fungal infections and to ensure better germination.
High Yielding Varieties of Basmati Paddy
IARI recommends several high yielding basmati paddy varieties, including Pusa Basmati 1509, Pusa Basmati 1985, Pusa Basmati 1979, Pusa Basmati 1692, Pusa Basmati 1885, Pusa Basmati 1847, Pusa 44, Pusa Basmati 1718, Pusa Basmati 1637, Pusa Sugandha-5, Pusa Sugandha-4 (Pusa 1121), Pant Dhan-4, and Pant Dhan-10.
These varieties are known for their superior yield, aroma, grain length, maturity period, and excellent market value. IARI strongly advises farmers to purchase seeds only from certified agencies to ensure seed purity, disease resistance, and high germination rates. Following proper techniques and using high-quality seeds can significantly boost production and income for farmers.
