Updated List Of Cell Fusion-free Vegetable Varieties
28 November 2025, Switzerland: In collaboration with breeding companies, the organic associations and FiBL have revised the list of cell fusion-free varieties of cabbage, chicory and root parsley. The list of varieties supports vegetable producers in the safe selection of cell fusion-free varieties.
The organic farming associations in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland reject cell fusion as a breeding method. The annual publication of a common list of varieties that are not based on cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) transmitted by cell fusion is intended to promote the availability of cell fusion-free varieties for vegetable production.
The updated list contains all currently available cell fusion-free varieties of cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, etc.), chicory (chicory, sugar loaf, cicorino rosso, etc.) and root parsley. The list is binding for producers of Bioland, Naturland, Demeter, Bio Austria, FNAB, Bio Cohérence and Biobreizh. For Bio Suisse farmers, the use of cauliflower, broccoli, white cabbage, savoy cabbage and chicory from cell fusion breeding is still permitted in order to ensure cultivation safety.
The updated list can be downloaded free of charge from the FiBL Shop.
