China Nears Completion of Summer Wheat Harvest with 75% Cropped Across 17.3 Million Hectares
17 June 2025, China: China has successfully harvested about 75% of its summer wheat crop as of mid June afternoon, covering 260 million mu or approximately 17.3 million hectares, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
The large-scale operation gained momentum in mid June, with 13.8 million mu harvested using 196,600 combine harvesters across the country. This marks a slight year-on-year increase in harvesting area but a small dip in the number of machines used, compared to 10.37 million mu harvested with 197,200 machines on the same date in 2024.
Summer wheat, a staple of China’s seasonal grain output, is typically sown in the autumn or winter of the previous year—or early spring—and harvested during the summer. It forms the backbone of the country’s summer grain production, accounting for over 90% of the category. In total, summer grains contribute about 21% to China’s annual grain output, which also includes early rice and autumn crops.
Harvesting operations are progressing smoothly across key wheat-growing regions. The province of Jiangsu has nearly completed its harvest. Other provinces are also advancing: Shaanxi has harvested over 80% of its wheat, Shanxi over 60%, Shandong nearly 60%, and Hebei more than 25%.
The ministry attributes the increased harvest efficiency to advancements in agricultural mechanization. Government-backed subsidies have supported farmers in purchasing new-generation machinery and upgrading aging equipment. As a result, more modern combine harvesters equipped with smart technologies—such as assisted driving, real-time operation monitoring, and digital touch interfaces—are now being deployed in the fields.
Favorable weather conditions are also aiding the harvest. Meteorological departments reported the nearing end of the rainfall that began on June 6. With clearer skies expected over most wheat-producing regions, faster crop maturation and uninterrupted harvesting are anticipated in the coming days.
