In Oman, Director-general Meets Senior Officials And Underscores Collective Action For Sustainable Agriculture And Fisheries

28 February 2026, Oman: FAO Director-General QU Dongyu concluded a two-day official mission to the Sultanate of Oman, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and science-based solutions to advance sustainable fisheries and natural resource management.

During the mission, the Director-General met with His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs.

Qu also met with senior government officials during which he reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting Oman’s sustainability agenda, as well as with H.E. Saud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al-Habsi, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. Following the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of the FAO Oman Country Programming Framework 2026-2030 which paves the way for strengthened cooperation between FAO and Oman.

The Director-General also met with H.E. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, President of the Environment Authority (EA), to further enhance collaboration in environmental sustainability.

A key highlight during the visit was the launch of the Fisheries Resources Survey Programme in the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman at Muscat Port where the Director-General inaugurated the initiative and toured the research vessel Dr. Fridtjof Nansen. The vessel is set to spend 236 days at sea collecting data on fish stocks, marine ecosystems and environmental conditions. Implemented under EAF-Nansen Programme in cooperation with Oman and Norway, the survey will strengthen science-based decision-making, advance FAO Blue Transformation and contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 14 on Life Below Water.

Concluding his visit, the Director-General toured Al Mirani Fort, a historic fortress and cultural landmark that showcases Oman’s rich heritage through its museums, exhibits and interactive digital experiences.
