India’s Foodgrain Output Jumps Nearly 8% to 357.73 Million Tonnes in 2024–25, Shows Final Estimate
21 November 2025, New Delhi: India has registered its highest-ever foodgrain production in 2024–25, reaching 357.73 million tonnes, according to the final crop output estimates released today by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. The figure marks an 8% increase over last year’s 332.30 million tonnes and represents the largest decade-long growth ever recorded in India’s agriculture sector.
Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, while releasing the estimates in New Delhi mentioned that India’s total foodgrain output has expanded by over 106 million tonnes in ten years, rising from 251.54 million tonnes in 2015–16 to 357.73 million tonnes in 2024–25. He added that the consistent increase reflects rapid advancements in agriculture under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pulses and oilseeds—two critical components for food security and import reduction—also made significant gains:
- Total pulses production: 25.68 million tonnes
- Chickpea: 11.11 million tonnes
- Moong: 4.24 million tonnes
- Tur (pigeonpea): 3.62 million tonnes
- Total oilseeds output surged to a record 42.99 million tonnes, up from 39.67 million tonnes last year.
- Soybean: 15.27 million tonnes
- Groundnut: 11.94 million tonnes
- Rapeseed & Mustard: 12.67 million tonnes
Commercial crops also showed robust performance with sugarcane production at 454.61 million tonnes, cotton at 29.72 lakh bales (170 kg each), and jute & mesta at 8.80 lakh bales (180 kg each).
Government Credits Farmers, MSP Policy, and Oilseed Missions
Minister Chouhan expressed satisfaction over the strong performance in both pulses and oilseeds, especially under the government’s ongoing oilseed and pulses missions. He noted that India’s “Oilseed Mission” has delivered encouraging results, pushing oilseed output up by more than 8% in a single year.
He also stressed that guaranteed procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP) for tur, urad, chana, and moong has significantly benefited farmers, strengthening the domestic production ecosystem.
Pulses Self-Reliance Mission to Accelerate Growth
Chouhan said that the newly launched Pulses Self-Reliance Mission will further strengthen domestic pulse production and reduce import dependence. Senior officials also discussed forward-looking strategies after the release of the final estimates.
The Minister affirmed that the government will continue prioritising farmers’ welfare and agricultural growth, expressing confidence that India will maintain its upward trajectory in foodgrain production under the various agriculture-focused schemes currently being implemented.
