Lantmännen Invests SEK 100 Million In New High-tech Plant Breeding Facility In Svalöv
24 October 2025, Sweden: Lantmännen is investing SEK 100 million in a new facility in Svalöv to make its plant breeding operations more efficient and future-ready. The investment builds on Lantmännen’s specialist expertise and leverages advanced machine-learning models.
The Svalöv facility develops crop varieties adapted to the Swedish climate. These plants will have improved stress tolerance, resulting in higher, more stable yields with consistent quality. This strengthens farmers’ profitability and Sweden’s food preparedness.
“The new facility is another step in creating long-term value for our customers, members, and employees. By developing the plant breeding of the future, we aim to contribute to a stronger Swedish agriculture,” says Lars-Gunnar Edh, Head of Lantmännen Lantbruk.
The initiative means that Lantmännen is moving its seed and grain analysis operations in-house instead of relying on external partners. This enables faster results, more efficient use of resources, and greater control over production — while ensuring consistent quality.
“By conducting the analyses ourselves, we strengthen both profitability and competence. It allows us to fully utilize our resources, develop new methods of working, and increase the precision of what we deliver to customers. The foundation for our plant breeding is reinforced as we invest in state-of-the-art equipment based on machine learning,” says Desirée Börjesdotter, Head of Plant Breeding at Lantmännen.
The analysis operations are accredited by Swedac, the Swedish authority responsible for ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
“By expanding our operations in Svalöv, we are securing an efficient and forward-looking plant breeding operation. The extended analysis capacity enables better planning, greater flexibility, and even better service for Swedish farmers,” says Johannes Åkerblom, Head of Crop Production at Lantmännen.
Construction will begin in autumn 2025, and the facility is expected to be completed during the first half of 2027.
