10,000+ Raids in Rajasthan Target Adulterated Seeds and Fertilizers
21 August 2025, New Delhi: The Government of India has highlighted ongoing efforts to tackle the issue of adulterated fertilizers and seeds in Rajasthan, following a question raised in the Lok Sabha.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, informed the House that the supply of quality fertilizers is regulated under the Fertiliser (Inorganic, Organic or Mixed) Control Order, 1985, while seeds are governed by the Seed Act, 1966, and associated rules. Enforcement is primarily the responsibility of state governments, with guidance and oversight from central authorities.
Between April 2025 and 8th August 2025, Rajasthan witnessed 10,423 raids targeting sub-standard fertilizers. These actions resulted in 853 show-cause notices, suspension or cancellation of 54 licenses, and registration of 53 FIRs. Central inspection teams also conducted visits in Alwar and Bharatpur districts to check fertilizer compliance, covering chemical, organic, bio-fertilizers, micronutrients, bio-stimulants, fermented and liquid organic manure, nano fertilizers, water-soluble fertilizers, liquid fertilizers, fortified fertilizers, and customized formulations.
In Tonk district, 424 fertilizer samples and 437 seed samples were tested over the past two years. Of these, 46 fertilizer samples and 13 seed samples were found to be sub-standard. The state government has initiated legal action, with seven cases each for fertilizers and seeds currently in court.
While punitive measures such as license cancellation, fines, and imprisonment are enforced under the Fertiliser Control Order and Seed Act, there is currently no provision for compensating farmers for losses due to spurious inputs.
