Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Reviews Pesticide Regulation, Calls for Strong Action Against Counterfeit Products
26 July 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has issued firm directives to prevent the sale of counterfeit and substandard pesticides, emphasizing that such products must not reach farmers under any circumstance.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi, the minister stated, “We must act in the best interest of farmers. During visits to states, I have repeatedly heard from farmers that fake pesticides ruin their crops and cause significant losses. This must stop. No fake or substandard pesticide should be allowed in the market.”
Strong Action Against Counterfeit Products
Chouhan stressed that both central and state governments must work in close coordination to enforce stringent action against those involved in the manufacturing or sale of counterfeit pesticides. “Anyone found guilty of selling fake or low-quality pesticides must face strict punishment,” he said.
He also emphasized that the pesticide registration process must be completely transparent, efficient, and designed in such a way that farmers and stakeholders are not caught in unnecessary bureaucratic loops. “There should be a proper tracking mechanism during the registration process to ensure accountability,” he added.
Directions for Systemic Strengthening and Farmer Safeguards
The minister instructed central government officials to work in close partnership with state agricultural departments to strengthen the entire ecosystem dealing with pesticide regulation. He further directed that an effective grievance redressal mechanism must be set up, ensuring timely response and resolution of farmers’ complaints.
Highlighting the importance of scientific and timely intervention, he urged the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the ministry to ensure regular monitoring of changes in crops in the fields. “Farmers must receive proper guidance quickly. If diseases are emerging in crops, scientists must identify them and ensure digital solutions are shared in an impactful and accessible way.”
Focus on Awareness and Proactive Action
The minister called on Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and the agricultural extension workforce to work collaboratively with state-level staff to educate and raise awareness among farmers, so they are better prepared to safeguard their crops.
“We must adopt a unified approach—One Nation, One Agriculture, One Team,” he said. “Regular dialogues with farmers must be held. During the Kharif sowing season, timely advisories should be provided, and pre-emptive strategies should also be put in place for the Rabi season. It is the responsibility of every officer to ensure this on the ground.”
