Assam Sets Record in Paddy Procurement: Crosses 7 Lakh Metric Tonnes, Direct Benefit to Farmers
02 July 2025, Guwahati: The Assam government has achieved a record paddy procurement during the Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024–25. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state has procured 6.97 lakh metric tonnes of paddy so far – the highest quantity ever recorded. This is more than double the amount procured last year. He called this achievement a testament to the government’s commitment to the welfare of farmers.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, the Chief Minister wrote, “We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the Kharif Marketing Season 2024–25 with a record procurement of 6.97 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. This is a historic milestone for Assam.”
More Than Double Compared to Previous Years
In comparison, Assam procured only 3.14 lakh metric tonnes of paddy during the 2023–24 Kharif season, and 5.92 lakh metric tonnes in 2022–23. The target for the current season was 5.85 lakh metric tonnes, but procurement far exceeded this, demonstrating the state government’s proactive efforts to purchase paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) directly from farmers.
Farmers Receive Direct Benefit Through MSP
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that this achievement reflects the government’s dedication to connecting farmers to markets and ensuring they receive fair prices. The entire procurement was done at MSP, ensuring direct economic benefits to farmers and strengthening their financial position.
Acceleration in Kharif Crop Sowing
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the total area sown under Kharif crops this year has reached 89.29 lakh hectares, compared to 87.81 lakh hectares during the same period last year. This increase of 1.48 lakh hectares in the early sowing phase suggests the potential for improved crop yields, which could enhance farmer incomes and contribute to national food security.
