Big Boost for Farmers: Government Approves Massive Procurement of Summer Moong and Groundnut for 2025–26 Season

16 June 2025, New Delhi: The Government of India has approved procurement of 54,166 metric tonnes (MT) of Moong under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for the summer crop season 2025–26 in the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. In addition, approval has been granted for the procurement of 50,750 MT of Groundnut in Uttar Pradesh under the same scheme for the upcoming summer season.

In a recent meeting, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also approved an extension of the procurement period in Andhra Pradesh by 15 days, allowing purchases until 26th June 2025, to further support farmers in the state.

To encourage domestic pulse production and reduce the country’s dependence on imports, the government has permitted procurement of Tur (Arhar), Urad, and Masur under PSS up to 100% of the respective state’s production for the procurement year 2024–25. This ambitious measure was further strengthened in the Union Budget 2025, where the government extended the scheme for four more years, up to 2028–29. Under this plan, procurement will continue through Central Nodal Agencies — NAFED and NCCF — aiming for self-sufficiency in pulse production at the national level.

The Price Support Scheme operates under the broader Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA), which also includes the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS), Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), and Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF). The integrated scheme aims to ensure farmers receive assured and remunerative prices for their produce, thereby safeguarding their income from market fluctuations. PSS is activated whenever market prices for notified pulses, oilseeds, and copra fall below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) during peak harvesting periods.
