Bihar Launches Vegetable Exports to Dubai Under Cooperative Model

08 June 2025, New Delhi: Bihar has commenced exporting green vegetables to international markets, beginning with a shipment to Dubai. The initiative is spearheaded by the Bihar State Vegetable Processing and Marketing Cooperative Federation Limited (VEGFED), a cooperative body formed on the lines of the successful dairy model COMFED.

On June 6, a 1,500-kilogram consignment of fresh vegetables was dispatched from Varanasi to Dubai. The produce is headed for retail at the Lulu Mall in Dubai. State Cooperative Minister Dr. Prem Kumar confirmed the shipment, emphasizing the state’s push to position Bihari vegetables in global markets.

VEGFED works closely with farmers across regions like Tirhut, Vaishali, Champaran, and Magadh—areas that have historically contributed to the state’s dairy supply chain. Now, these regions are being integrated into a vegetable export network aimed at maximizing farmer returns. According to the Minister, growers could earn prices up to 20 times higher in international markets compared to domestic sales.

The initial shipment included ten types of vegetables such as jackfruit, cauliflower, eggplant (brinjal), and bottle gourd. Minister Kumar also revealed that Dubai-based Lulu Mall has requested a larger consignment totaling 45 metric tonnes. VEGFED is also preparing for future exports to Singapore as part of its global outreach.

To support domestic distribution and enhance branding, the government is expanding its network of “Tarkari” vegetable outlets, similar to COMFED’s milk booths. Out of a planned 534 outlets across the state, 200 locations have already been identified and allocated funds.

In alignment with the International Year of Cooperatives, Bihar is positioning its vegetable growers under a collective marketing approach, aiming to replicate the dairy sector’s cooperative-led growth. A VEGFED committee will be established in each of the state’s 495 blocks, with four cooperative unions already involved in the rollout.
