Chhattisgarh Government Takes Major Step: NPK and SSP Fertilisers to Offset DAP Shortfall; Fertiliser Distribution Target Raised to 1.718 Million Tonnes
07 July 2025, Raipur: Amid the ongoing shortfall in the import of DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) fertiliser during the current Kharif season, the Chhattisgarh government has taken decisive steps to ensure uninterrupted fertiliser supply to farmers. To bridge the gap caused by reduced DAP availability, the state will rely on alternative fertilisers such as NPK and SSP.
In response to the shortfall, the state has revised its fertiliser distribution targets significantly. The allocation for NPK (20:20:0:13 and 12:32:16) has been increased from 180,000 metric tonnes to 490,000 metric tonnes. Similarly, the target for SSP (Single Super Phosphate) has been raised from 200,000 metric tonnes to 353,000 metric tonnes. Conversely, the DAP allocation has been reduced from 310,000 metric tonnes to 103,000 metric tonnes. There is no change in the targets for Urea (712,000 tonnes) and MOP (60,000 tonnes). With these adjustments, the overall fertiliser distribution target for the Kharif 2025 season has been increased from 1.462 million tonnes to 1.718 million tonnes.
“No Shortage for Farmers,” Assures Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai reassured farmers, stating there is no need to panic over the DAP shortage. “We have ensured a robust supply plan so that farmers receive fertilisers on time. Alternatives like NPK and SSP are equally effective in sustaining crop productivity,” he said. The government is committed to supplying fertilisers and seeds based on farmers’ demand, he added.
Agricultural Experts Endorse NPK and SSP as Viable Alternatives
According to agricultural scientists and the state agriculture department, NPK and SSP are effective substitutes for DAP. A typical DAP bag contains 23 kg of phosphorus and 9 kg of nitrogen. By using three bags of SSP and one bag of urea, farmers can provide their crops with sufficient phosphorus, nitrogen, sulphur, and calcium.
SSP not only aids in crop quality and root development but also enhances overall yield. Experts are also encouraging farmers to use organic fertilisers, which help maintain soil fertility in the long term.
Adequate Storage and Distribution in Place
The agriculture department reported that as of now, 1.213 million metric tonnes of fertiliser have been stocked for Kharif 2025. Of this, 729,000 metric tonnes have already been distributed to farmers. A remaining 484,000 metric tonnes are currently available with cooperative and private distributors. The government is ensuring timely supply to all cooperative societies and sales centres to prevent any disruption in agricultural activities.
