Government Probes Irregularities in Crop Loss Compensation Disbursement
21 August 2025, New Delhi: The Government of India has acknowledged complaints of irregularities in the disbursement of compensation to farmers whose crops were destroyed by hailstorms and floods during 2023–24. The matter was raised in the Lok Sabha through Starred Question No. 376 by Dr. Bachhav Shobha Dinesh, drawing attention to the alleged misuse of funds allocated under farmer relief.
In 2023–24, the Union Government had sanctioned ₹1,500 crore to support nearly 13 lakh farmers, including those in Jalna district of Maharashtra, who suffered heavy losses due to extreme weather events. Reports later emerged that multiple payments were allegedly made to the same individuals, raising suspicions about the conduct of local block-level officers involved in the compensation process.
Responding in the House, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed that the government had taken note of the complaints. He stated that an enquiry had been instituted to review the matter in detail and determine the extent of irregularities.
The Minister also indicated that accountability measures were being considered, including punitive action against officials found guilty of malpractice. Additionally, the government is exploring systemic reforms to ensure transparency in future compensation disbursements. This includes strengthening digital monitoring systems and enhancing verification protocols to prevent duplicate or fraudulent claims.
With climate-induced crop losses becoming increasingly common across India, the issue has drawn significant attention from policymakers and farmer groups alike. The government is expected to present its detailed findings and corrective measures in the coming weeks.
