India Weather Forecast: Active Monsoon Brings Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Across Several Regions from 11 to 17 August 2025
11 August 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed monsoon forecast highlighting an active phase of rainfall across multiple parts of India during 11th to 17th August 2025. This period is expected to witness widespread heavy to very heavy rains, impacting agriculture, water resources, and daily life in various states.
Northern India to See Intense Rainfall Over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
In the northern region, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are expected to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during the next seven days. Particularly, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand on 11th and 13th August. Other northern states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, will receive intermittent heavy showers during this period.
The active monsoon trough, currently positioned north of its usual location near the Himalayan foothills, is a key driver behind these weather patterns.
East and Central India to Witness Fresh Spells of Heavy Rainfall
East and central India are forecasted to experience an increase in rainfall activity from mid-August. Madhya Pradesh, both its eastern and western parts, along with Vidarbha, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, will witness fresh spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall between 13th and 17th August. On certain days, isolated very heavy rainfall is expected, especially in West Madhya Pradesh on 17th August and Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on the 13th and 14th.
These conditions are influenced by a low-pressure area likely to develop over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around 13th August, which will subsequently intensify and enhance rainfall over these regions.
Northeast India to Receive Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall
The northeastern states, including Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, are forecasted to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during 11th to 14th August. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 11th and 12th August and over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya on 12th August. Throughout this period, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning will prevail, continuing the active monsoon influence in the northeast.
South Peninsular India to Experience Active Monsoon with Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds
South India will also witness an active monsoon spell with heavy to very heavy rainfall over Telangana, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry from 11th to 17th August.
Telangana is likely to face extremely heavy rainfall on 14th and 15th August. Alongside rainfall, strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected over the region in the coming days, accompanied by widespread thunderstorms and lightning activity.
Western India to See Scattered Heavy Rainfall in Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa
Western India, particularly Maharashtra (including Madhya Maharashtra), Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada, is expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall during 12th to 17th August. Very heavy rainfall may occur over Konkan, Goa, and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on 16th and 17th August. The rest of the western region will mostly receive light to moderate rainfall over the week.
Meteorological Systems Driving the Active Monsoon Phase
The current monsoon activity is driven by several key weather systems. The western end of the monsoon trough is located north of its normal position and extends near the foothills of the Himalayas. Upper air cyclonic circulations are active over northwest Uttar Pradesh, north coastal Andhra Pradesh adjoining Telangana, northeast Assam, and Kutch, influencing rainfall patterns in these areas.
Additionally, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around 13th August and is likely to intensify in the subsequent days, enhancing rainfall over east-central and peninsular India. A western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir is also affecting northern weather.
Advisory for Fishermen
Due to rough weather conditions and strong winds associated with the monsoon systems and low-pressure development, fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into certain parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and adjoining seas from 11th to 16th August.
