India’s Dr. B.M. Prasanna Honoured Among 2025 Top Agri-Food Pioneers for Global Impact in Maize Genetics
25 June 2025, New Delhi: Dr. Boddupalli Maruthi Prasanna, a globally recognized agricultural scientist from India, has been named to the prestigious 2025 Top Agri-Food Pioneers (TAP) List by the World Food Prize Foundation. His decades-long work in maize genetics, breeding, and seed systems has helped transform agricultural productivity and food security across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Currently serving as Distinguished Scientist and Regional Director for Asia at CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center), Dr. Prasanna has led global efforts to develop climate-resilient, stress-tolerant, and biofortified maize varieties tailored for smallholder farmers. These varieties have contributed significantly to increasing productivity while addressing nutritional deficiencies in vulnerable populations. He has recently been appointed as Managing Director of Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA).
Over the past three decades, Dr. Prasanna has also focused on building robust seed systems, promoting sustainable intensification, and supporting resilience to emerging threats like fall armyworm and other crop diseases that affect maize worldwide.
Beyond scientific research, Dr. Prasanna has been a strong advocate for capacity building and policy transformation. His leadership in training agricultural scientists, strengthening public research institutions, and fostering global partnerships has helped shape more resilient and responsive food systems throughout the Global South.
The Top Agri-Food Pioneers (TAP) List celebrates changemakers in the global food and agriculture sector. Dr. Prasanna will be formally recognized at the 2025 Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue, scheduled for October 21–23 in Des Moines, Iowa.
