Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands; Rain and Heat Alerts Issued Across India

14 May 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially announced the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over parts of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to the IMD, the monsoon has advanced into some areas of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and parts of the north Andaman Sea as of May 13, 2025.

This advancement follows sustained meteorological indicators over the past two days, including widespread rainfall in the Nicobar Islands, strengthening of westerly winds, and a significant drop in outgoing longwave radiation in the region. Westerly winds have been recorded at speeds above 20 knots at 1.5 km above mean sea level, with a depth of up to 4.5 km over some regions.

The current Northern Limit of the Monsoon now passes through 5°N/75°E, 5°N/80°E, 6°N/86°E, 8.5°N/90°E, Hut Bay, 13°N/95°E, and 16°N/98°E. Forecast models suggest that conditions are favorable for further advancement of the monsoon into additional parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives-Comorin region, more areas of the south Bay of Bengal, and the central Bay of Bengal, as well as the remaining areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next 3-4 days.

In the wake of this development, the IMD has also issued a weather advisory. Rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected to persist over South Peninsular India and adjoining central India for the next five days. States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu may experience isolated heavy rainfall over the next three days.

Meanwhile, Northeast India is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning for the next five days. In contrast, several northern and eastern states are set to endure a heatwave. Uttar Pradesh is expected to see intense heat conditions from May 14 to 19, West Rajasthan from May 15 to 17, and Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand between May 14 and 15.
