India’s Maize Prices Fall Sharply in October; Madhya Pradesh Records the Biggest Decline

22 November 2025, New DelhiIndia’s wholesale maize markets experienced widespread price softness in October 2025, with several states showing significant declines compared to both the previous month and the previous year. The national average for October stood at Rs. 2,127.80 per quintal, only marginally higher than September but considerably lower than October 2024. The data shows that Madhya Pradesh, one of India’s key maize-growing states, faced the steepest decline among all reporting regions.

National Trend Shows Continued Weakness

The overall average wholesale price of maize in October 2025 was Rs. 2,127.80 per quintal, compared to Rs. 2,115.43 in September 2025 and Rs. 2,439.75 in October 2024. Market arrivals have remained high in several states due to a strong kharif harvest, while demand from feed, starch and processing industries has not increased proportionately. With limited export opportunities and cautious procurement behaviour from buyers, wholesale markets across the country continued to soften.

Madhya Pradesh: Steepest Decline Among All States

Madhya Pradesh recorded a wholesale price of Rs. 1,579.89 per quintal in October 2025. This represents a decline from Rs. 1,703.61 in September 2025 and a far sharper decline from Rs. 2,041.51 in October 2024. In percentage terms, Madhya Pradesh prices fell 7.3 per cent compared to last month and 22.6 per cent compared to last year, marking the largest year-on-year drop among all major maize-producing states.

The decline in Madhya Pradesh is linked to heavy mandi arrivals following a good harvest, reduced purchase activity by private buyers, and weak export signals that have limited upward price movement. As a major contributor to India’s maize production, the steep fall in this state is expected to influence the broader pricing environment across central India.

Price movements across other states show a mixed pattern. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat recorded substantial year-on-year declines as large market arrivals coincided with subdued industrial demand. In contrast, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Punjab showed upward movement either due to tighter supplies or stronger demand from feed and poultry industries. Delhi registered a month-on-month rise but remained significantly below last year’s levels, reflecting a partial recovery in demand.

Impact on Farmers and Industry

The decline in maize prices, particularly in Madhya Pradesh, raises concerns for farmer incomes during the transition to the rabi season. With input costs remaining stable or rising in some pockets, lower maize realisations may affect farmers’ liquidity and influence their decisions on wheat and chana sowing. On the industry side, lower maize prices benefit feed, poultry and starch manufacturers by reducing raw material costs. The market’s direction over the next two months will depend on how quickly arrivals taper and whether demand from processors strengthens.
