List of Insecticides Banned in Punjab for Basmati Paddy Season

26 May 2025, New Delhi:  In a significant move to protect the quality of Punjab’s prized Basmati rice and ensure its smooth export, the Punjab Government has imposed a temporary ban on the sale, distribution, and use of 11 insecticides specifically on Basmati paddy crops. The ban, announced in the official gazette dated 10 May 2025, will be enforced from 1 August 2025 and will remain in effect for 60 days.

This step follows recommendations by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, and the Punjab Rice Millers and Exporters Association, who raised concerns over pesticide residues exceeding permissible limits (Maximum Residue Level – MRL) in Basmati rice grains. Such residues have been found to threaten export potential and risk rejection in international markets.
