Madhya Pradesh Farmers Await State Government’s Nod for Moong Procurement at MSP
05 June 2025, New Delhi: Even as summer moong cultivation in Madhya Pradesh has expanded significantly this year, the state government has not yet sent a proposal to the central government for procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). This delay is especially concerning given that last year in 2024, the registration for moong procurement had already begun by May 20. For the year 2025, the process has yet to begin, raising frustration among farmers across several districts.
Farmers Left Waiting Amid Procurement Uncertainty
Key moong-producing districts like Harda, Narmadapuram, Sehore, Vidisha, and Raisen are witnessing growing farmer protests due to the delay in procurement. Despite registrations beginning earlier in 2024, no such step has been taken this year, and the Centre is yet to receive any proposal from the MP government.
This year, moong has been sown in about 10.21 lakh hectare area in 16 districts of the state, which was 9.89 lakh hectare in the same period last year. The estimated production is expected to be 20 lakh tonnes.
No Instructions from State Government Yet
Although the MP Agriculture Department has handled moong procurement for the past two years, officials state that no direction has been given this year to initiate the process or to send the proposal to the Centre.
MSP Declared, but Farmers Getting Lower Prices
The central government has already declared the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for moong at ₹8,682 per quintal for the 2024–25 marketing season, and this has been further increased to ₹8,768 per quintal for the 2025–26 season. Despite these official rates, farmers in Madhya Pradesh are being forced to sell their moong produce in local mandis at much lower prices, typically ranging between ₹6,000 and ₹6,500 per quintal. This price gap has led to significant distress among farmers, as they are unable to secure even the base support promised under MSP, resulting in financial losses during peak harvesting and sale periods.
