MSP Legal Guarantee is Demand of Farmers Across India, Not Just Punjab-Haryana: Dallewal at Jantar Mantar

26 August 2025, New Delhi: Farmers from across the country gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Monday for a massive “Kisan Mahapanchayat,” where leaders reiterated that the demand for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) is not confined to Punjab and Haryana but has become the voice of cultivators across India.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal, senior leader of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), addressed the gathering and made it clear that the fight for MSP has turned into a national movement. “MSP is not the issue of two states—it is the collective demand of food growers from every corner of the country,” he said.

The Mahapanchayat comes nearly four years after the historic farmers’ agitation of 2020–21, which forced the central government to withdraw the three controversial farm laws.

Three Core Demands Placed Before Government

During the event, farmers emphasized three key issues:

  • A legal guarantee on MSP for all crops, along with the resolution of pending demands linked to protests at Shambhu, Khanauri, and Ratnpura borders.
  • Exclusion of agriculture, dairy, poultry, and fisheries from the proposed India-US trade agreement to protect farmers’ livelihoods.
  • Withdrawal of all cases filed during the 2020–21 farmers’ protest.

Government Signals Openness to Talks

Hours before the Mahapanchayat, the Union Agriculture Ministry reached out to SKM (non-political), asking the farmer delegation to suggest a date for dialogue. The move indicates the government may be willing to reopen discussions on some of the contentious demands.

Dallewal confirmed that the farmers’ collective has already submitted a memorandum addressed to the Agriculture Minister. “We appeal to the government to act quickly. Farmers cannot wait endlessly for their rights,” he said.

A Movement Rekindled

This Mahapanchayat marks the return of farmers to Delhi streets after nearly four years. The earlier movement had set a precedent in India’s farm politics by forcing the repeal of three central laws. Now, the focus has shifted to securing MSP through law, shielding agriculture from global trade deals, and ensuring justice for those targeted during the previous protests.

As thousands of farmers raised slogans at Jantar Mantar, the message was unmistakable—India’s farm unions are ready once again to pressure the government for long-pending reforms that they believe are critical for the survival of rural livelihoods.
