Nationwide Rollout of ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ Set to Begin Under Leadership of Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan

26 May 2025, New Delhi: Under the visionary leadership of Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, preparations for the ambitious ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ have entered the final stretch. This landmark national campaign will be formally launched on 29th May from the revered town of Puri, Odisha, aiming to transform the agricultural landscape of India through a deeply integrated approach involving farmers, scientists, and policymakers.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and state governments. Designed to directly engage with over 1.5 crore farmers across more than 700 districts, this grassroots outreach program will bring agricultural innovations and solutions to the very doorsteps of India’s farming communities.

A Vision Rooted in Service to Farmers

Addressing a national gathering of agricultural scientists at the NASC Complex in New Delhi, Mr. Chouhan reaffirmed his commitment to India’s farmers. “My life is devoted to the service of farmers — to increase their production, reduce their costs, ensure national food security, and secure the future of Indian agriculture,” he declared. He stressed the importance of balanced fertilizer use, adoption of region-specific practices, and greater access to quality seeds—all underpinned by credible scientific research.

Mr. Chouhan emphasized that farming is not merely a profession but an emotional pursuit, and therefore, must be treated with compassion, collaboration, and commitment. He described the Abhiyan as a long-overdue convergence of farmers, agricultural scientists, and government officials, aiming to bridge the critical gap between research and field-level adoption.

Campaign Backed by Strong Institutional Framework

Reiterating the government’s full support, Mr. Chouhan assured that there will be no dearth of funding for agricultural research and innovation, stating that under the leadership of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, science and technology will be the bedrock of India’s agricultural progress.

He called upon India’s agricultural institutions to project their capabilities globally: “Our scientists have the knowledge and potential to place India at the forefront of global agricultural excellence. This campaign will also be a celebration of your dedication.”

Demand-Driven Research Takes Centre Stage

During the session, Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), underscored the campaign’s focus on demand-driven research. He noted that the age of supply-side agricultural research is over; today’s challenges require farmer-led innovations and research that is responsive to field realities. The Abhiyan, he said, offers a structured platform to translate complex scientific findings into practical solutions for farmers.

Mr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, MoA&FW, highlighted the sheer scale of potential impact: “India has 210 million hectares of net cropped area. A mere one-quintal per hectare increase in productivity could exponentially raise the nation’s agricultural output.”

Massive Outreach to Begin from 29th May

The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan will be held from 29 May to 12 June 2025, during which teams of scientists from 731 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), 113 ICAR institutes, and central and state agricultural universities will fan out to rural areas. These teams will hold interactive village-level events, offering practical advice, demonstrations, and solutions in the fields of agriculture, horticulture, livestock, and fisheries. State officials and progressive farmers will also participate actively, making the campaign a multi-stakeholder movement toward sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Director, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, recognizing the collective commitment of all participants to the success of this transformative initiative.
