PBW 872 and PBW 833 Top Wheat Varieties in India with Yields Reaching 45.7 Quintals per Hectare

25 September 2025, Ludhiana: Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has achieved recognition once again with two of its wheat varieties, PBW 872 and PBW 833, emerging as top performers in the national wheat varietal trials for the 2024–25 season. Their performance underscores PAU’s continued role in developing varieties that combine high yield potential with adaptability to diverse growing conditions.

PBW 872, released in 2022 for the North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ), excelled under early-sown, high-input conditions, securing the first position for yield. The variety matures in about 152 days and has an average plant height of around 100 centimeters, which reduces the risk of lodging. It shows moderate resistance to yellow and brown rust diseases, offering some protection against common wheat threats. Its grains are large and bright, with an average 1,000-kernel weight of about 45 grams, making them attractive in the market. For farmers following the rice–wheat cropping system, PBW 872 has become a preferred choice, delivering both strong yields and better economic returns.

PBW 833 demonstrated its strength in the North Eastern Plains Zone (NEPZ), particularly under late-sown conditions. In the 2024–25 national trials conducted at 13 locations, it delivered an average yield of 45.7 quintals per hectare. In comparison, other tested varieties such as DBW 107 and HD 3118 recorded lower yields of 42.5 quintals and 40.9 quintals per hectare, respectively. These results confirm PBW 833 as a dependable option for farmers dealing with delayed sowing.

PAU has also announced that seeds of PBW 872 and PBW 833 will be made available at its upcoming farmer fairs, giving growers direct access to these improved varieties. The results of the national trials show that both PBW 872 and PBW 833 offer a combination of yield performance and practical suitability, making them valuable additions to farmers’ fields across different wheat-growing regions.
