Poor-Quality Soybean Seeds Spark Ministerial Rebuke; Shivraj Singh Chouhan Orders Immediate Action

14 July 2025, VidishaUnion Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, expressed strong displeasure over the distribution of substandard soybean seeds during a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting held in Vidisha on Saturday.

The Minister came down heavily on officials for negligence in the seed distribution mechanism during the Kharif season. “If you don’t have accurate data and information, how will you help the farmers?” he questioned pointedly. He demanded an immediate and comprehensive report on the seed distribution process and accountability for the lapses observed.

Sharp Rebuke Over Poor-Quality Seeds in Ganj Basoda

During the meeting, complaints from Ganj Basoda region regarding inferior soybean seed quality were brought to the Minister’s attention. Chouhan grilled officials with direct questions: “How many farmers received the seeds? How much land was supposed to be sown? On what basis were targets decided?” When officials failed to provide satisfactory answers, the Minister strongly reprimanded them, stating, “Incomplete information will not help farmers—learn to be accountable.”

Chouhan reviewed the current Kharif season and instructed officials to immediately submit a detailed report on the seed distribution and storage system. He emphasized that farmers must receive quality seeds on time to prevent any production losses. He warned that any further negligence in these areas would result in strict disciplinary action.

Early Preparations Mandated for Rabi Season

Looking ahead, the Minister also gave clear directives regarding Rabi season preparations. “Strategies must be finalized now to avoid any inconvenience to farmers in the coming season,” he said, adding that delay or negligence would not be tolerated. “Farmer welfare must remain the top priority,” he stated firmly.

Responsibilities Extended to Elected Representatives

In a stern message to public representatives present at the meeting, Chouhan said, “Your duty doesn’t end with attending meetings—you must understand ground realities. When you inspect work personally, those responsible become more accountable.” He urged them to monitor rural welfare schemes such as the Prime Minister’s Rural Housing Scheme, road projects, and seed distribution efforts to ensure proper implementation.
