Punjab Government Announces Free Wheat Seeds for Flood-Hit Farmers

25 September 2025, ChandigarhIn a major relief move for farmers affected by the recent floods, the Punjab government has announced free distribution of 200,000 quintals of wheat seeds ahead of the upcoming Rabi season. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the seeds, worth nearly ₹74 crore, will help farmers resume cultivation without additional financial burden.

The floods submerged over 2,300 villages in Punjab, impacting more than 2 million people. Preliminary estimates suggest losses of nearly ₹13,800 crore, with around 500,000 acres of standing crops completely destroyed.

Calling farmers the backbone of India’s food security, CM Mann assured that the state government stands firmly with them during this crisis and will extend all possible support.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also visited the flood-affected areas to assess crop damage. Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and announced a relief package. However, the Punjab government termed the central aid insufficient and sought greater financial assistance.

Beyond immediate crop loss, farmers now face the challenge of silt deposits left on their fields, which could take months to clear and may impact sowing in the Rabi season, raising concerns over overall yield.

This year’s floods came after Punjab recorded its heaviest rainfall in 25 years—253.7 mm in August, about 74% above normal. Haryana too saw 32% higher-than-average rainfall. The disaster claimed 57 lives in Punjab and left thousands of acres of farmland damaged, while waterlogging and crop losses were also reported from several parts of Haryana.
