Record Growth in Mango Production Drives India’s 2024-25 Horticulture Output: Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan Announces

26 June 2025, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has released the second advance estimates for horticulture crops for the year 2024-25, revealing significant growth in area and production. Union Agriculture Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan announced that the total area under horticulture crops has increased by 1.81 lakh hectares from the previous year to reach 292.67 lakh hectares. The total horticulture production is estimated at a record 3677.24 lakh tonnes, marking a 3.66% increase compared to 2023-24 and surpassing last year’s output by 129.80 lakh tonnes.

Fruit Production on the Rise

The fruit production for 2024-25 is expected to increase by 1.36%, reaching 1145.10 lakh tonnes, an increase of 15.32 lakh tonnes compared to the previous year. This rise is largely driven by higher output of watermelon, mango, banana, mandarin, sweet orange (mosambi), and papaya. Mango production is projected at approximately 228.37 lakh tonnes, up from 223.98 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, reflecting a steady rise in India’s favorite fruit. Banana production is estimated at around 380.35 lakh tonnes, compared to 376.14 lakh tonnes last year. Watermelon output is also expected to grow substantially to 44.70 lakh tonnes, up from 37.21 lakh tonnes.

Vegetables Take the Lead

Vegetable production is anticipated to grow by 6.02%, increasing from 2072.08 lakh tonnes in 2023-24 to 2196.74 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. This increase is driven by higher production of onions, potatoes, green chili, tapioca, and bottle gourd. Onion production is forecasted to rise significantly to 307.72 lakh tonnes, which is 65.05 lakh tonnes more than the previous year. Potato production is expected to reach 601.75 lakh tonnes, an increase of 31.21 lakh tonnes compared to last year. Tomato production is slightly estimated to decrease to 207.52 lakh tonnes from 213.23 lakh tonnes in 2023-24.

In the spices category, total production is projected at 123.70 lakh tonnes, slightly below last year’s 124.84 lakh tonnes. Ginger output is expected to increase to 25.42 lakh tonnes from 23.33 lakh tonnes, garlic production to 35.03 lakh tonnes from 33.16 lakh tonnes, and turmeric to 12.04 lakh tonnes from 10.63 lakh tonnes.
