Strong Global Demand Pushes Indian Onion Exports Toward Record 1.15 Million Tonnes

10 November 2025, New Delhi: India’s onion exports are expected to exceed last year’s 1.15 million tonnes, supported by strong production, favorable weather, and sustained overseas demand, according to an industry expert.

Ample supplies across major onion-producing belts including Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, and Jalgaon (Maharashtra), as well as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka have ensured smooth trade movement. Consistent harvesting and efficient logistics, coupled with government buffer stocks and monitoring mechanisms, have helped maintain price stability and ensured uninterrupted exports.

The expert highlighted that Light Red Onions have emerged as the dominant variety in exports owing to their longer shelf life and superior bulb formation. Onions from Nashik continue to be highly preferred internationally for their light, balanced pungency, which appeals to Middle Eastern consumers more than Pakistani or Egyptian onions. Meanwhile, the Bellary Rose Onion remains a favorite among South Indian ethnic communities abroad and is widely used in hotels and restaurants for whole use in salads and sambar preparations.
