Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan Orders Large-Scale Raids and Field Sampling to Curb Spurious Farm Inputs
18 August 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, has taken a tough stance against the sale of spurious fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides in the country. Chairing a high-level meeting with senior officials of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi, the Minister directed strict and immediate action against those involved in the sale of fake agricultural inputs.
Chauhan emphasized that crop losses due to spurious products must be treated with utmost seriousness by officials to prevent financial and livelihood damage to farmers. He instructed officials to conduct large-scale raids, collect samples from fields, and take decisive measures against violators.
The Minister expressed deep concern over rising complaints from multiple districts where farmers reported that pesticides and fertilizers being applied in fields showed no impact. Sharing his recent field visit, Chauhan said he personally witnessed soybean crops completely destroyed due to substandard pesticides. Hundreds of farmers had gathered at the site and raised grievances. “Those selling such low-quality or counterfeit products must not be spared. The harshest possible action should be taken against them,” he stressed.
Chauhan described spurious fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides as a “curse for farmers” and assured that those exploiting farmers will face strong punitive measures, including sealing of factories and shops found guilty of malpractice. He further directed agriculture officials to work in coordination with state governments, conduct surprise inspections on a large scale, and ensure failed product samples lead to immediate legal action.
Reiterating his commitment to farmers’ welfare, Chauhan said, “If something wrong is happening, it is our duty to act firmly in the interest of farmers. Farmers’ grievances must be addressed promptly, and I will personally review the status of complaints.” He also instructed officials to increase farmer awareness campaigns to prevent them from falling victim to spurious products.
The Minister said that awareness efforts will also be strengthened under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan to protect farmers from losses. In addition, Chauhan directed teams to verify the actual benefits of government subsidies provided for polyhouses, greenhouses, and mechanization. He stressed that subsidies must reach genuine farmers in a timely manner and be regularly monitored for effective implementation.
