Uttar Pradesh Bans 11 Pesticides on Basmati Rice for 60 Days

25 August 2025, Lucknow: In a major step to improve the quality of basmati rice and align with international export standards, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a 60-day ban on the sale, storage, distribution, and use of 11 chemical pesticides across 30 districts. The order, effective from August 1, 2025, aims to ensure residue-free production and boost the state’s share in global rice markets.

The restricted pesticides include tricyclazole, buprofezin, acephate, chlorpyriphos, tebuconazole, propiconazole, thiamethoxam, profenofos, imidacloprid, carbendazim, and carbofuran. According to District Plant Protection Officer Nikhil Dev Tiwari, residues of these chemicals not only affect grain quality but also hinder exports.

The agriculture department has issued strict guidelines to pesticide dealers and warned of legal action against violations. Farmers have been advised to completely stop chemical pesticide use at least one month before harvest. Instead, biological options such as neem oil, Trichoderma, and Beauveria bassiana have been recommended, along with the use of light, pheromone, and sticky traps.

Officials believe the move will enhance export competitiveness, encourage organic farming, and protect soil health and the environment in the long run.
