The Woman Behind the Wheel: Paramjit Kaur’s Rise in Commercial Farming
29 September 2025, Sitapur: For nearly four decades, Paramjit Kaur had never once sat on a bicycle. Farming was always her husband Dharampal’s domain, while she managed the household. But in 2015, life shifted dramatically when Dharampal passed away, leaving behind not only grief but also the responsibility of 90 acres of farmland.
Many advised her to sell the land and return to her native Punjab. But Paramjit could not imagine parting with the fields that held her husband’s sweat, toil, and dreams. “I will never sell this Swaraj. My husband bought it in 2002 and was in love with it. He added two more tractors in 2007 and 2014. For me, this tractor is Dharampal’s personification, my tribute to him,” she says with quiet determination.
At 50, Paramjit did the unthinkable—she took the driver’s seat of the Swaraj tractor. What began as an act of survival soon became her way of honoring Dharampal’s legacy. Today, she is not only adept at handling the machine but has also turned her farm into a flourishing enterprise.
Paramjit ventured into commercial sugarcane sapling production. Her first experiment with 50,000 sets saw her sell 30,000 successfully. Encouraged, she expanded to a nursery of one lakh bales, earning handsome profits. With this, there was no looking back.
She cleared the loans taken during her husband’s illness and reinvested in her farm. Setting up an agricultural equipment bank, she extended support to fellow farmers. More importantly, she formed self-help groups and brought over two dozen women into farming and related activities, helping them become financially independent.
Paramjit’s journey is not just about keeping her husband’s memory alive—it’s about resilience, reinvention, and empowerment. From never riding a bicycle to mastering tractors and running a thriving agribusiness, she has proven that courage and determination can turn even the toughest of setbacks into stories of strength.
