Arevo Launches New Crop Nutrition System to Reduce Reliance on Mineral Fertilisers
02 December 2025, Sweden: Arevo has introduced Arginex, a new crop nutrition system designed to reduce dependence on mineral fertilisers and improve predictability of crop yields. The launch comes as 60–70% of soils in Europe are classified as degraded, according to the European Environment Agency, directly affecting productivity and increasing nutrient losses. The FAO reports that productivity has fallen by at least 10% in areas facing human-induced land degradation.
Mineral fertilisers have traditionally supplied nutrients to crops but face efficiency limits, with around 50% of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser lost through leaching. This loss contributes to nutrient runoff and water pollution across Europe. With fertiliser prices rising by nearly 11% between January and September, farmers are exploring alternative nutrient solutions but require evidence of consistent performance.
Arginex is based on a compound formed by arginine, a nitrogen-rich amino acid that plants absorb directly, and phosphate. The formulation remains in soil, resists leaching and delivers nutrients gradually at the root zone. It can be applied on seed, soil or as a foliar spray. According to Arevo, the system enhances root development, supports microbial interactions, and offers steady nutrient release.
Niklas Åström, CEO of Arevo, said the product’s non-microbial composition ensures batch-to-batch consistency. Arginex has been developed through more than a decade of research and has shown yield gains in field trials, including a 4.3% grain yield increase in corn with 20% less fertiliser, a 6.4% yield increase in potatoes, and 4.5–6.0% increases in soybeans compared to untreated controls.
Climate-related losses also pose challenges for farmers. The European Investment Bank estimates annual agricultural losses of over USD 28 billion due to extreme weather. Arevo reports that arginine-based nutrition supports seedling development through improved root architecture and stable nutrient supply.
Arevo states that Arginex is intended to offer a new approach to crop nutrition and contribute to long-term changes in fertiliser use.
