Common Weed-Control Chemicals Used on Corn, Turf and Lawns Found to Pose Cancer Risk: IARC Study
27 November 2025, New Delhi: A new international study has raised fresh concerns about three chemicals widely used in farming and lawn-care. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has published its latest evaluation in The Lancet Oncology, examining the health risks linked to the herbicides atrazine and alachlor, and the fungicide vinclozolin. These chemicals have been used for decades on corn fields, fruits, vegetables, golf courses, parks, and home lawns to control weeds and plant diseases.
What the Scientists Found
The study explains that atrazine and alachlor show enough scientific evidence to be classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” which means long-term exposure may increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Atrazine has shown links to a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, while alachlor has been associated with cancer of the larynx. Vinclozolin, the third chemical evaluated, has been placed in the category of “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” as strong evidence was found in animal studies but not enough data exists in humans.
These conclusions come from a detailed review of research on how these chemicals behave in the body, results from human studies, and evidence from laboratory experiments. The findings do not indicate immediate harm but highlight the need for greater caution, especially because these products are used so widely in agriculture and public spaces.
Why It Matters for the Public
Farmers, gardeners, landscapers and people living near treated fields or lawns may come into contact with these chemicals through food, water or the environment. The new IARC evaluation is expected to guide global regulators and health agencies, who may now revisit existing rules, safety guidelines and approved uses. While these products remain in use in many countries, the study encourages awareness and underscores the importance of safer alternatives and responsible handling.
The complete scientific assessment will soon be published as Volume 140 of the IARC Monographs, offering more detailed information for policymakers and scientific experts.
