Codex Adopts Regional Standard for Castilla Lulo, Supporting Andean Producers and Strengthening Regional Trade
14 November 2025, Rome: The 48th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission has approved a new Regional Standard for Castilla Lulo (Naranjilla), a nutrient-rich tropical fruit native to the Andean highlands of Latin America. The standard applies to the Latin America and Caribbean region, where the fruit is primarily cultivated and traded.
Standardised Quality and Safety for an Emerging Commodity
The Castilla lulo, known for its greenish pulp and four internal seed compartments, is increasingly gaining market attention. The new Codex standard outlines:
- Minimum quality and maturity requirements
- Tolerances for defects
- Mandatory packaging and labelling information
- Provisions on contaminants and hygiene practices
This move supports small and mid-scale growers, strengthens regional markets, and enhances consumer protection across the supply chain.
