IARI Pusa Advisory: How Farmers Can Prevent Flower Shedding in Moong (Green Gram) Crop

16 June 2025, New Delhi: Farmers cultivating moong (green gram) are facing a concerning issue — premature flower shedding, which can significantly impact yields. Experts from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, have identified two primary reasons behind this problem: lack of adequate moisture in the field and infestation of thrips insects.

According to IARI scientists, maintaining proper soil moisture is crucial. Insufficient irrigation or prolonged dry spells can lead to early shedding of flowers. Proper irrigation management can help farmers control this issue to a large extent and ensure healthy flowering.

The second major cause is the attack of thrips, a tiny insect that damages the tender parts of the plant, resulting in flower drop and reduced yields. Thrips feed on the plant tissues, disrupting the flowering process and weakening the crop.

To control thrips infestation, IARI has recommended an effective solution. Farmers are advised to spray a mixture of 60 to 70 milliliters of Imidacloprid in 200 liters of water per acre. This insecticide directly targets thrips, offering protection to the crop and minimizing losses.

Experts emphasize that early identification and timely intervention are key. If farmers act promptly by ensuring proper irrigation and implementing effective pest control measures, they can protect their moong crops and secure a good harvest.

Farmers are also encouraged to regularly monitor their fields. At the first signs of flower shedding, they should immediately adopt appropriate irrigation and pest management practices to prevent further damage.
