Cambodia’s Banana Exports Reach 260,000 Tons, Driven by China Trade
22 June 2025, New Delhi: Cambodia exported approximately 260,000 metric tons of fresh bananas in 2024, with the majority—around 95%—shipped to China, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global agricultural trade.
The nation has allocated nearly 21,000 hectares for banana cultivation, out of which 15,000 hectares are currently under harvest. With an average productivity of 25 tons per hectare, total production reached 400,000 tons last year. Notably, 24 banana plantations and 36 packing facilities have received official approval to export directly to China.
Speaking at the launch of a banana supply chain initiative by Cambodia Banana Agricultural Chemical Company on June 6, 2025, H.E. Kong Chanveasna, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the firm’s contribution to local production and export infrastructure. According to official data, Cambodia exported a total of 12 million tons of agricultural produce to 95 countries in 2024, generating approximately $220 million in revenue. China alone accounted for more than 800,000 tons, reflecting its importance as a trading partner.
While China remains the top destination, Cambodian bananas are also being exported to other Asian markets such as Vietnam, South Korea, and Malaysia—helping the country diversify its export base and enhance income opportunities for farmers.
The company managing the new supply chain is also supplying domestic retailers and has announced plans to expand exports further. After sending 20,000 tons of bananas abroad in 2024, the company aims to boost this figure to 30,000 tons in 2025, cementing Cambodia’s expanding footprint in the fresh fruit sector.
With favorable growing conditions and increasing international demand, Cambodia is positioning itself as a significant player in the global fresh banana trade, particularly through its deepening ties with China and other regional markets.
