Chhattisgarh Cracks Down on Fertilizer Overpricing; Farmers Receive Urea at ₹266 Per Bag
06 August 2025, Chhattisgarh: In a bid to ensure fair access to agricultural inputs during the ongoing Kharif season, the Department of Agriculture in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district has taken stringent action against private agri-retailers found selling fertilizers at inflated prices.
Acting on multiple farmer complaints, a district-level inspection team conducted a surprise raid on August 4 in Korar town, Bhanupratappur block. The operation was led by Assistant Directors of Agriculture Sudhir Dadoria and Gunjan Singh Bhadauria, along with input inspectors and agricultural officers.
Fertilizers Found Sold at Triple the Price
During the inspection, officials uncovered significant irregularities in point-of-sale (POS) records and physical stock in several private agri-input outlets. According to Bhanupratappur’s Senior Agricultural Development Officer, farmers had reported that urea was being sold at rates ranging from ₹500 to ₹600 per bag — nearly three times the government-fixed price.
One such location, Vijay Trends Fertilizer Godown in Korar, was found stocking 200 bags of urea. The inspection was timed with the local market day to ensure maximum farmer outreach.
Immediate Action Ensures Relief for Farmers
In response, the district administration intervened on the spot and facilitated the sale of urea and other fertilizers to farmers at official rates. Urea was sold at ₹266.50 per bag, DAP at ₹1,350, MOP (Potash) at ₹1,535, and SSP (Single Super Phosphate) at ₹495. A total of 79 bags of urea were distributed among 27 farmers at subsidized prices.
Strict Warning to Retailers, Helpline for Farmers
The Agriculture Department issued stern warnings to all private input dealers, stating that hoarding, black marketing, and exploitation of farmers would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Officials urged farmers to immediately report any instances of overpricing or malpractice.
“The government is committed to protecting farmers’ interests. Any retailer found violating pricing norms will face strict legal action,” the department said in a public statement.
