Digital Wave Redefines Madhya Pradesh’s Agricultural Markets
E-Mandi Scheme Becomes a New Strength for Farmers
17 August 2025, New Delhi: To provide farmers with comprehensive, hassle-free facilities in market yards, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has taken a bold step towards modernisation by introducing the E-Mandi concept. Initially launched in 2021 as a pilot project in just eight markets, the scheme—driven by the innovative leadership of Mandi Board Managing Director Mr. Kumar Purushottam—has now been successfully rolled out to all 259 markets across the state, marking a major milestone in Madhya Pradesh’s agricultural system.

Today, farmers experience a seamless process from market entry to contracting, selling, certification, licensing, and clearance. They can instantly track which trader purchased their produce and at what price. This digital transformation has streamlined workflows, increased efficiency, and removed delays and redundant processes, resulting in a more agile and effective market system.
Mr. Purushottam reported that over 2.134 million farmers have registered under the scheme, which has earned the prestigious Scotch Order of Merit Award 2023 for its outstanding contribution to agricultural reform.
E-License System
According to Mr. Kumar Purushottam, more than 64,000 market traders across Madhya Pradesh are now using the E-License system to generate their own gate passes for transporting purchased produce. As a result, manual license issuance by market employees has been reduced to almost zero.
The system has significantly improved record management, with every payment now digitally recorded. This enables market committees to ensure timely payments to farmers. Developed with the support of NIC, the E-License system is currently unique to Madhya Pradesh at the national level.
To date, over 11.357 million licenses have been issued—of which 9.4 million were generated directly by traders and 1.952 million by the market authorities.
MP Farm Gate App
Mr. Purushottam also highlighted the MP Farm Gate App, an Android-based mobile application that empowers farmers to sell their produce directly from their home, farm, or warehouse—at a price they decide—without visiting the market yard.So far, more than 679,000 farmers have used the app to sell 77.1 million quintals of various crops. This has given farmers the freedom to choose whether to sell in the mandi or directly from their location.
“Digital platforms are reducing crowding in mandis, a clear sign of expanding agricultural reforms and improving convenience for farmers,” remarked Mr. Purushottam.
How the Mandi App Works
Farmers can now generate entry slips on their mobile phones before arriving at the market. Once created, the data is saved, so there’s no need to re-enter it for future visits. This allows farmers to head straight to the auction site and sell their produce without delays. The app also provides real-time auction updates, showing exactly which trader purchased their produce and at what price—right on the farmer’s phone.
Other Benefits of the Digital Process
Under the E-Mandi scheme, all activities in the market yard such as auctioning, weighing, and payments—is now fully computerised. Traders and weighmen have been trained to seamlessly adopt these digital systems.
Final weight measurements are recorded directly on Android devices, removing the need for traditional handwritten slips. Traders can access their payment records through secure digital IDs and simply confirm the payment entries. All sales data is stored in real-time online records, while farmers receive instant updates via SMS and WhatsApp. This has brought greater transparency, reduced paperwork, and strengthened the trust between farmers and market operators.
Mr. Purushottam expressed confidence that such innovations will continue to evolve, ensuring that market operations remain transparent while making farmers more empowered, informed, and self-reliant.
