India Meets 73% of Fertiliser Demand Domestically in 2025 as Output Reaches 524.62 Lakh Tonnes

12 January 2026, New DelhiIndia significantly reduced its reliance on fertiliser imports in 2025, with domestic production meeting nearly 73 percent of the country’s total fertiliser requirement, according to official data released by the Government of India. The milestone reflects sustained policy efforts to strengthen fertiliser security and ensure uninterrupted availability of key nutrients to farmers.

To stabilise supplies amid global market volatility, the government has focused on long-term sourcing agreements for critical raw materials and strategic diversification of import channels. These measures have been aimed at mitigating risks arising from international supply disruptions while supporting consistent domestic output.

Domestic fertiliser production has shown a steady upward trajectory over the past five years. Total output, including urea, DAP, NPKs and SSP, increased from 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021 to 467.87 lakh tonnes in 2022. Production rose sharply to 507.93 lakh tonnes in 2023 and remained stable at 509.57 lakh tonnes in 2024, before reaching an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes in 2025.

The increase has been supported by the commissioning of new fertiliser plants, the revival of previously closed units, expansion of indigenous manufacturing capacity, and improved availability of raw materials. Together, these interventions have enhanced the capacity and resilience of India’s fertiliser manufacturing ecosystem, contributing to greater supply stability for the agricultural sector.

The government said the continued focus on domestic production is intended to support farmers with timely access to fertilisers while reducing exposure to international price fluctuations and supply uncertainties.
