India Needs Climate-Resilient, Location-Specific Farming Systems: Agriculture Commissioner at 5th Sustainable Agriculture Summit and Awards 2025

16 December 2025, New DelhiIndia needs to significantly strengthen the resilience of its agricultural systems through location-specific agronomy, efficient use of water resources, reduction in the cost of cultivation and promotion of crops aligned with future agricultural requirements, senior government officials said at an industry forum in the national capital.

Addressing FICCI’s 5th Sustainable Agriculture Summit and Awards 2025, Dr Praveen K Singh, Agriculture Commissioner, Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, emphasised the need to adopt region-specific farming practices, scale up waste-to-wealth initiatives and improve the utilisation of surface and rainwater resources to enhance long-term farm resilience. He noted that these measures are critical in addressing climate variability while ensuring productivity and profitability for farmers.

The summit was organised by FICCI with YES BANK as the knowledge partner, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on pathways for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture in India.

Speaking on the occasion, Naveen Kumar Patle, Additional Commissioner (Horticulture – Fruit), Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture, particularly in the horticulture sector, to balance environmental concerns with farmer income growth.

During the event, the FICCI–YES BANK report titled “Sustainability Champions: Recognizing Private Sector Initiatives Strengthening Sustainable Agriculture in India” was released by senior dignitaries, showcasing private sector initiatives that are contributing to sustainable agricultural development.

The FICCI Sustainable Agriculture Awards 2025 were also announced at the summit. Siraj Chaudhry, Senior Member, FICCI, said that at a time when Indian agriculture is undergoing rapid transformation, the award-winning initiatives serve as inspiring examples for the wider agricultural ecosystem.

Launched in 2021, the FICCI Sustainable Agriculture Awards recognise organisations across key focus areas including sustainable farmer income enhancement, farm-level sustainability in sourcing, natural resource management and climate-resilient agriculture, agri-based decarbonisation, and sustainable livelihood advancement for women in agriculture.
