Major Industries Unite to Boost Regenerative Farming in Edible Oils
25 August 2025, Bhopal: In a major step for India’s edible oil sector, leading industry associations, research institutes, government agencies, and civil society groups have launched the National Alliance for Regenerative Vegetable Oil Sector (NARVOS) in Bhopal.
At the event, the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) announced a buyback commitment for regenerative products, supported by its 800 member companies. The initiative, led by Solidaridad under the EU–India partnership, aims to promote climate-resilient food systems, strengthen farmer incomes, and reduce India’s dependence on edible oil imports.
India currently imports about 60% of its edible oil, costing over ₹1.5 lakh crore (USD 18 billion) annually. Meanwhile, declining soil fertility threatens oilseed production across 27 million hectares, with more than half of India’s farmland already degraded.
Industry leaders said regenerative agriculture practices—such as low tilling, cover cropping, and compost use—can boost yields by 20–40%while cutting input costs up to 50%.
SEA Vice President Angshu Mallick said regenerative farming offers India a “win–win pathway” to improve soil health, lower costs, and secure food supplies. Other speakers, including Dr. B.V. Mehta (SEA) and Dr. Manoranjan Mohanty (IISS), stressed that soil restoration and sustainable models are key to the future of farming.
