Monsoon Regains Strength Across India: Heavy Rainfall Likely in Several States, Alerts Issued for Maharashtra and Uttarakhand
12 September 2025, New Delhi: The Indian monsoon has picked up momentum again, bringing a renewed spell of rain across many regions. A new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is fueling widespread rainfall that extends from the southern states to the northeast and central parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, and possible flooding in several regions. At the same time, Delhi and parts of northern India are likely to experience only light showers with humid conditions, while western Rajasthan is preparing for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon around mid-September.
Weather Systems Driving Rainfall
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. This is accompanied by a trough stretching from north Andhra Pradesh to Maharashtra, which is influencing weather patterns at lower and middle levels of the atmosphere. A cyclonic circulation is also present up to 5.8 km above sea level, adding strength to the system. Meanwhile, conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to begin withdrawing from western Rajasthan around September 15.
Regional Forecasts
In the northeast, rainfall activity will intensify between September 12 and 18. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will see light to moderate showers with thunderstorms.
