Itau BBA Estimates Brazil Soy Production Could Increase 61.5%
12 November 2025, Brazil: Brazil has increased its soybean acreage for 18 consecutive years and that trend is expected to continue going forward. In recent years, most of the soybean expansion has been the result of converting degraded pastures to row crop production. Most of that conversion has been in two regions, the center-west region consisting of the states of Mato Grosso, Goias, and Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Matopiba region of northeastern Brazil including the states of Maranhao, Tocantins, Piaui, and Bahia.
The Agro Consulting division of the Brazilian Bank Itau BBA, recently estimated that Brazil’s soybean production could increase by 61.5% through the conversion of degraded pastures to row crop production. This would equate to an additional production of 105 million tons compared to the 170 million tons produced in 2024/25, although they did not give a timeline for the increase.
Embrapa estimates that 28 million hectares of pastures (69.1 million acres), approximately 17% of the pastures in Brazil, has the potential to be converted to row crop production. These 28 million hectares could increase the soybean acreage by 59%. The center-west region would contribute the most to this conversion, but it could also extend to the Matopiba region of northeastern Brazil.
Since approximately 80% of Brazil’s corn is produced as a second crop following soybeans, Itau BBA estimates that the corn acreage could increase 10.2 million hectares (25.1 million acres) and corn production could increase 58% compared to the 144 million tons produced in 2024/25.
