Codex Revises Aflatoxin Code of Practice for Peanuts, Strengthens Global Measures Against Carcinogenic Contaminants

14 November 2025, RomeIn a decisive move to reduce one of the world’s most dangerous food contaminants, the Codex Alimentarius Commission has adopted a significantly updated Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Aflatoxin Contamination in Peanuts (CXC 55-2004) during its 48th Session.

Stronger Global Measures for Aflatoxin Control

Aflatoxins—among the most potent liver carcinogens known—are linked to acute toxicity, chronic health effects, immunosuppression and genotoxicity. The updated Codex code reflects new scientific insights and practical measures applicable across the peanut supply chain.

Key updates include:

  • A new table detailing peanut reproductive growth stages, indicating optimal harvest maturity.
  • Inclusion of feed within the scope, recognising that peanut by-products enter animal feed systems.
  • A new section describing how roasting significantly reduces aflatoxin levels.

These revisions strengthen preventive controls from pre-harvest to storage and manufacturing, supporting safer domestic consumption and export compliance.
