27% of Kharif Crop Harvest Completed; Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Reviews Progress
Favourable monsoon, improved water storage, and timely sowing boost outlook for Rabi season
31 October 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, reviewed the progress of the ongoing Kharif harvest and preparations for the Rabi season. He said that this year’s favourable monsoon, sufficient rainfall, and improved water storage across major reservoirs have significantly supported the agriculture sector, leading to healthy crop growth and timely harvesting.
During the review meeting, it was reported that nearly 27 percent of the total Kharif area has been harvested across the country, while Rabi sowing has begun in several regions. The Minister noted that Kharif 2025 witnessed strong sowing trends across major crops. Paddy cultivation reached 441.58 lakh hectares, higher than last year’s acreage. Oilseed crops, primarily soybean and groundnut, covered 190.13 lakh hectares, while pulses expanded to 120.41 lakh hectares, contributing to nutrition security. Sugarcane occupied 59.07 lakh hectares, benefiting farmers in major producing states.
Agriculture Commissioner Dr. P.K. Singh informed that water availability in reservoirs and irrigation projects has improved considerably. The total storage in 161 major reservoirs currently stands at 165.58 billion cubic meters (BCM)— 104.30% of last year’s level and 115.95% of the 10-year average. This has ensured adequate irrigation for Kharif crops and favorable conditions for Rabi sowing.
The condition of horticultural crops such as onion, potato, and tomato was reported to be stable, while rice and wheat stocks remain above buffer norms, ensuring national food security and stable supply.
Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the combination of timely rainfall, effective planning, and adoption of digital tools has strengthened the agriculture sector and helped maintain steady growth. He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, farmer-oriented policies have improved productivity and farm incomes across the country.
He further stated that the Central Government, in coordination with State Governments, will provide all necessary support to expand the cultivation of pulses and oilseeds and achieve record productivity during the Rabi season. The Minister also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the Union Cabinet’s approval of ₹38,000 crore towards fertilizer subsidy, ensuring timely and affordable supply to farmers.
